Basa Bata to join The National Library of the Philippines' Library and Information Services Month

Proclamation No. 837 declares the month of November as Library and Information Services Month. It was created so the public can be aware of the invaluable service that libraries and information centers provide.

Scheduled activities in the morning include a motorcade, a holy mass, and awarding for the "2008 Outstanding City Libraries in Metro Manila."

Basa Bata, in cooperation with P/B Rosa Justo of Barangay 20, will bring 60 children from their Day Care Center to visit the Children's Library. There will be a storytelling session and the children will be entertained by "The Chubster" with an interactive magic, puppet and balloon show. (Check out The Chubster's official website at www.thechubstershow.com for the latest news, announcements, and public appearance.)

After the program at the Children's Library, the children will also have the chance to tour adjacent parks like the Quirino Grandstand and Luneta Park.

The event is on November 3, 2008 at The National Library of the Philippines.

Mga Kwentong Pambata

Basa Bata promotes storytelling as an effective strategy that develops literacy and motivation to learn.

Storytelling has a great potential to overcome barriers that often impede with the learning process of children in low income families: low self-esteem, thwarted imagination and lack of motivation in learning to read and write.

Through storytelling, children can learn to connect to themselves and each other, stimulate the imagination, curiosity and thinking ability, express themselves clearly, and heighten social awareness through the adventures and conflicts illustrated with simplicity and wisdom in world folk literature.

Sa Aklat Aangat

Imagine the possibilities if every child in our community have been regularly read to by the most important teacher in their lives – their parents!

The attitudes of parents about learning become the educational values of their children. It is through the parents where the cycle of learning of every child begins.

Successful storybook reading that leads to literacy involves interaction between parent and child. The parent mediates between the child’s own language and the language of the text and helps the child construct meaning from it. Therefore, it is essential to have access to a wide variety of reading materials if a child is to grow and develop into a strong reader.
However, majority of Filipino children from low-income families have no age-appropriate books at all in their homes or daycare centers, and as a result, direct access to books is limited.
That is why, with Basa Bata’s Sa Aklat Aangat program, we will not only make books available to children, parents and daycare teachers, we will make it unavoidable!
Here are important details of the Sa Aklat Aangat program:
-10 daycare centers to receive 50 different age-appropriate storytelling books
-Parents and daycare teachers to attend a brief seminar about the program
-Basa Bata will provide parents tips on how to read to children
-Students are REQUIRED to bring home one book everyday for their parents to read to them
-Parents will have to sign the monitoring sheet at the back of each book
-Teachers to monitor the number of books read by the parents and the students
Together, we can make a difference on the lives of our children!!!
